Gerard Philips established his company in The Netherlands in 1891 and by the turn of the century became Europe's largest producer of carbon-filament lamps. Now one of the largest electronics manufacturers in the world, Philip's activities range as wide as being the inventor of the compact cassette and compact disc to one of the largest producers of the electric shaver. A somewhat less known Philips product is called the Pronto: a touch-screen universal remote control which will learn the function of any remote controllable device and simplify its operation.
