CEDIA awards finalist 2008
The brief from the client was to turn the top floor “play room / Gym” into a room that will be used primarily as a home cinema for the kids and their friends. Through careful use of the space, we have also created a separate sleeping area which is curtained off which will allow the area to be used as a guest bedroom for “sleep overs”. The seating arrangements need to be comfortable and able to accommodate 6-8 people.
The system needed to be used not only for cinema use, but be able to be used with a Mac, various games consoles and be easy to use. Naturally, with a project of this nature, high quality picture and audio performance was paramount and the customer already had a reference point of quality audio from the existing Meridian surround system we installed as part of the whole house AV installation we carried out a few years ago.
| To meet the design criteria of having discrete but high quality speakers, we decided to use a Screen Research acoustically transparent screen with three Meridian on-wall speakers mounted behind. This meant building out a frame to house the speakers and screen. Below the screen, we worked with the interior designer to come up with a neat idea of providing a floating cabinet on the wall that also had smart cable management with ducts running to the AV equipment rack located in an eaves cupboard just behind the screen. This flexibility allows for simple addition of games consoles and upgrades in future. | |
| The use of the Cineversum Black wing 2 pro projector was ideal in this installation as it provided a superb level of video quality and a wide range of mounting options to allow it to be suspended neatly making use of the space where the ceiling slopes. The projector design complements the room design and looks great. | |
| This room was initially an airy open play room space, when it was converted to use as a cinema, it was necessary for us to control the natural light as well as the artificial light, and both of these were achieved via our control systems. The ceiling roof light is fitted with a black out blind which is operated via its own hand held remote or from the Crestron system. |
